A Medical Conference in the Dominican Republic for WMSD

The “Renacer Fundacion Dominicana de Em” (The Dominican Republic MS Foundation) held a medical conference on the 25th May for its World MS Day celebration. They were joined by Doctor Maria Adelita Reyes-Velarde, who gave a lecture called “Living well with MS”. They coordinated Dr Reyes-Velarde’s visit with visiting members of the media, and took the opportunity to discuss the importance of government funded medication for patients, and the difficulties arising from the current high cost of social security. They also discussed 2011’s theme of work and the importance of speaking out against discrimination in the workplace. World MS Day for The Greece MS Society

The Greek Multiple Sclerosis Society’s World MS Day Celebrations are well underway. On the 25th May, they had an open discussion event for patients at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The discussion was centred around work and problems which face people with MS in their everyday life. There was also a presentation of recent treatments available. From the 8th to the 24th June they are holding an art exhibition in Thessaloniki. The artwork has all been created by people with MS. Research and employment – WMSD in Yemen

On the 24th May in Yemen an event was held at the Faculty of Medicine at Aden University. The day was attended by officials, academics and members of the public, and a paper was presented on current MS Research. A speech was given at the start of the ceremony, followed by an update on the progress of the MS Society over the past year. The World MS Day topic of Work and Employment was also covered, in particular emphasis was put on increasing employer’s understanding and how they can best assist their employees with MS. World MS Day Celebrations in Egypt

On 20 May the Egyptian MS Care Society celebrated World MS Day (WMSD) and the Society’s first MS Day. Some 200 people with MS, their families, friends, volunteers and, in keeping with the WMSD theme of work, employers attended a full day of activities at the Canadian International College in Cairo. The day began with a series of inspiring MS films followed by lectures on new treatments including a talk on CCSVI. Participants had the opportunity to speak to Dream TV about how MS affects their lives; the role and importance of support groups like MS Care, the role of the government and the problems facing them regarding employment. Employers are failing to help people with MS to stay in work

An international survey conducted by MSIF (www.msif.org) has found that many employers are slow to implement the low-cost changes to their work environments that would enable people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to stay in work longer. To mark World MS Day 2011 (25 May), MSIF surveyed employers worldwide about work-based policies that could enable people with MS and other chronic fluctuating conditions to stay in work. The results are released in a report entitled: Multiple sclerosis at work: an employer’s perspective. A global survey of people with MS in 2009-2010 found that of people who had left work because of MS, 47% had left within three years of diagnosis.
