Kirsty

Posted on August 9th, 2012

In Australia World MS Day was a resounding success, with hundreds of people taking part in activities across the whole country. MS Australia and MS Research Australia all held events during the month of May and on the day itself. The “Kiss Goodbye to MS” campaign, which is in its third year, encouraged supporters to wear bright red lipstick, wear red clothes, dye their hair red or wear badges and stickers. Events were varied, from meeting the Australian Women’s Basketball team at Parliament house on their way to the Olympics, cupcake stalls, selling merchandise and charity dinners such as that held by the Green Bean society, who got into the theme in a big way with a Kissing booth and helped to raise over…

This year the Sri Lankan MS Association has joined forces with the Sri Lanka Medical Association and the Association of Sri Lankan Neurologists to host a series of events for MS health professionals and those affected by MS. A seminar held on the 30th May at the Sri Lanka Medical Association brought some 100 nurses and physiotherapists together to learn how best to train MS caregivers in home care and to reinforce the importance of physiotherapy in MS rehabilitation. Two get-together lunches for people with MS and their caregivers were also held in June. The lunches took place in Colombo and Kandy and provided the MS community with the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of physiotherapy as well as partaking in discussions…

Posted on August 3rd, 2012

Swedish Neurological association “Neurologiskt Handikappades Riksforbund” (NHR) launched a new website this year, to coincide with World MS Day. The website has been developed to assist people who have been recently diagnosed with MS by giving them valuable information about the disease and how they can treat it. NHR coupled the launch with the findings of a report which they also carried out this year. The association say that the report, which questionned people in Sweden with MS about issues they face regarding work and employment, found that 1 in 5 people with MS say that they have lost their job due to the condition. For more information and to view the report, please see the website http://www.avstamp.nhr.se/Avstamp   http://www.avstamp.nhr.se/ Tweet This Post Share…

Kirsty

Posted on August 3rd, 2012

Two new websites were launched by the Belgian MS Societies this year, with the aim of increasing awareness of MS amongst children and young adults. The first, which contains information on MS as well as news on activities and events, has been designed as a tool for young people to use themselves. They can upload their photos and videos, and talk to other young people with MS about the issues that affect them. The website, which was launched on the 30th May can be found here www.msjongeren.be . The second website, aimed at children with MS and those with a parent with MS, is specially designed for children aged seven and up, featuring cartoon mascots, and will be informative, entertaining and attractive to give…

The Portuguese MS Society (SPEM) had a busy schedule of events as they promoted world MS Day this year. Activities kicked off on the 12th May and carried out across 6 cities in the country: Évora, Faro, Leiria, Lisboa, Porto and Setúbal. The first event launched the “1000 faces of MS” campaign, and saw supporters and people with MS meeting together to celebrate World MS Day. These meetings continued to take place throughout May around the country, and resulted in some new friendships and networks created between patients, healthworkers and supporters, as you can see from the photos above.

From the 22nd to the 25th May an art exhibition entitled “Fernando (E)sclerose (M)últipla Pessoa”, was held at São Bento Palace, the home of the Portuguese government. The exhibition featured artwork by MS patients of the Occupational Activity Center (OAC) and live painting demonstrations from the artists. Two members of parliament, Elza Pais and Paulo Pisco attended the opening ceremony and welcomed board members from SPEM and the of course the artists. The event was held to raise awareness of the needs of and provision for people with MS within the country.

On the 30th May SPEM opened its headquarters to members of the local community with a day of celebrations. A poetry recital was given by members of OAC followed by musical entertainment from guitarist Luísa Amaro.  Later, Melanie Oliveira da Silva who has MS and was selected as torchbearer for the Olympics gave her testimony, and the day was rounded off with a chorus of “happy birthday” and a slice of World MS Day cake.

Elsewhere in the country, an educational session was given about Pregnancy and MS in partnership with the local Hospital, the Hospital do Espírito Santo de Évora. A fundraising event was held in Faro at the Mercado Municipal to raise money to build new treatment facilities in the area and In Leiria a puppet show was given to local elementary school children, entitled “Benjamin: My Mum is Special”, which helped open up discussion amongst the children about MS and its impact.
