World MS Day in the United Arab Emirates was carried out in style this year, with various activities taking place around the federation. In Tawam Hospital and UAE Hospital, an opera was recorded and performed on the 10th and 11th May. The Opera was written by poet Ahmed Ibrahim Al Zarouni and music by Saeed Al Nuaimi. The message is one of encouragement to people with MS to continue striving to achieve their goals and to support each other. In Merdif city centre a group of people with MS took part in iFly Dubai, again to show that having MS doesn’t necessarily prevent you from participating in activities like this, below is a photo of one the participants. A conference was held in Baghdad teaching hospital, in Iraq on the 26th May this year. The event was organised as part of the Iraqi MS Society’s World MS Day celebrations. A good number of people with MS, their supporters, friends and relatives attended as well Doctors and specialists. The meeting was headed by Senior Professor Dr. Akram Al-Mahdawi. The conference was opened by Dr. Sarmad Abdul Rasool Al-mashta, with an introduction to MS followed by a presentation of current treatments and drugs available. The Mumbai chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) went all out in their awareness raising campaign for World MS Day this year. They set up banners, posters and information stands all over the city on the 25th May giving information about MS and particularly this year’s theme of Work and Employment. As well as having banners up at various hospitals, they also had brochures in offices, Churchgate Railway station, the prestigious sporting event the Bombay Gymkhana, and even at Byculla Zoo. At Dadar Bandstand they gave out pamphlets as “Something Relevant”, a local rock band, played music. On the 25th May MS-Steunactie met with the Minister of Health in Belgium. The group (which translates as MS Action Group) presented Minister J.M. Delizée with a petition to change the way the law treats people with MS. The list of suggestions – which include things such as changing the difference in financial support for those living with relatives and those not, and people with MS being made eligible for a handicap parking card – was handed to the Minister by a group of delegates from the group (see below photograph).
